La Academia was a musical reality show created in Mexico by TV producer Giorgio Aresu, it was launched as a joint production by Television Azteca and Nostromo Producciones. This TV program seeks to prepare professional singers, where the students, selected after having passed a casting stage, show their talent through weekly concerts every Sunday; the audience votes for their favorite student for him/her not be the one with the least punctuation and abandon the reality show, the audience votes via telephone calls and/or text messages and decides on the winner.
The program has been re-broadcasted by other countries such as the United States, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Honduras, Paraguay, Nicaragua, El Salvador, among others. In Mexico, it was broadcasted for the first time on June 30th 2002.
La Academia has produced more than 250 alumni to 2012. However, only some of them have been able to out stand in the music industry in Mexico, as the case of Yahir and Myriam Montemayor who, with some record productions, have managed to obtain gold and platinum certifications; Nadia, who achieved to be nominated to the Grammy Awards, and Yuridia, who has managed to become one of the best record sellers.
